But the default timeout is 120 seconds. I get the error within one or two seconds. I've tried an explicit "with timeout of 120 seconds", with no effect.
Have you tried getting the size in a loop yet?

To me it looks as if calculating folder sizes is an independent process and the Finder simply isn't synchronizing with that. So itself doesn't wait long enough, before it is returning "missing value".

Maybe you can get what you want if you try to reget the value until the process calculating the size is actually finished?
