Quark 5 and "make paragraph" problem

Is there some sort of glitch in creating new paragraphs in a text box in
Quark 5? I'm trying to get a script that used to work properly converted
over to Quark 5.
"make new paragraph at end with data someData" used to work properly but now
all I get is a blank paragraph without the text in it.
Also, in one part of the script I refer to the box as "generic box 1" to
change some existing text but later in the script if I refer to that box
again as "generic box 1" Quark craps out with a Type 2 error. If I change
that part of the script to refer to the box as "text box 1" then it works
fine.
I'm hoping there is a simple solution to this as I'm getting a splitting
headache trying to figure this out...
