Dave, you really should use Smile instead of Apple's Script Editor.

1st, you can drop an icon to a window of Smile and get, either its path as a string, or (if you press command while dropping) a file reference to it.
2nd, Smile includes a scriptable text editor, so you would probably achieve what you want in very few lines.
3rd, Smile includes a persistent context mechanism, so you can script interactively: you run and test the lines of your script one by one.

Smile is a feedbackware - you don't have to pay for it with money.
