Hopefully a knowledgeable Apple developer will explain what we need to
do?
Looking around the web there appears to be a plethora of utilities
which offer to
add little applescript menus, but I don't see a 3rd party utility
should be
necessary to do this.
The Applescript is saved as an "Application" - how do I make it behave
like one?
thanks!

If I save this as an Application I can drop .ps files on to it, or
open
them with it.
However it never appears on the "Open With" context ctl-click menu -
even if
I make all .PS files open with my applescript.
Is there some magic to make this work ? i.e. 'register' the
Applescript
in some way
That's a good question. I couldn't figure it out either. I made up
some phony
file with a bogus filename extension, then did Open with --> Other,
selected my
little script app and selected the Always Open With checkbox. Now if I
double-click my phony file, my script app launches, but it still
doesn't show up
in the Open With menu.
