Graphic Converter allows script access to the IPTC section of a jpeg if it's there.
I also found some C code from the dark side - jhead - which will extract stuff like that from jpegs. Something like www.codeproject. I modified it into a UNIX executable which can be called from an AppleScript. It' s anything but clean but it might be a start. Ask.
