Any ideas of how to upgrade here, workarounds?
What do you mean by "install"? Is this via Software Update? As I best recall
(it's been a while), you can download AppleScript 1.8.3 for OS 9 (**make
sure it's not AS 1.8.3 for OS X**) from Apple's Software website, if you
look hard enough. When it arrives and unstuffs, it should have two files:
AppleScript and Standard Additions. You simply put the AppleScript file
into Extensions folder in System Folder, replacing the previous version,
and Standard Additions into the Scripting Additions folder in System Folder.
Then re-boot the computer. Nothing is "refused".
If you weren't trying to do this via Software Update, the only "installer"
is the one for AppleScript 1.8.3 for OS X - the wrong package. There's no
installer for the OS 9 version - you just do it manually as above. The trick
is finding the download at the website - but it's there.
