compress with resource forks

  • Subject: compress with resource forks

My Applescript skills have been improving steadily but my unix skills are lagging.
The recent thread "Really delete a file via AppleScript" has shown me how to use do shell script to copy a file to a different volume and preserve the resource forks.
I would like to create an option to compress a backup of a file while preserving the resource forks. Is it possible to use the shell to do this. I struggle with the man pages and have tried compress, gnutar -Z and gzip and but cannot find an option that works. I was hoping to use a shell script to avoid having to get a proprietary solution like Stuffit Deluxe.
I suspect that it is impossible. If so could a knowledgeable lister please put me out of my misery.
With apologies for being slightly OT

John Cochrane
