The initial response "which", I think, searches only for items within a user's current $PATH. In fact it's primary purpose is to see which copy of a filter will be used when there are more than one in different directories.
That makes me think that, for AppleScript, which does not use your login $PATH the real question may be how to "do" a shell script calling osascript. There is a tech note on that which ought to be read,
