It's a feature of a dot mac account. You can upload an image and it's automatically embeded (sort of) in every email you send.

I glanced at the Raw Source in Mail, but my untrained eyes have no idea
what to look for. I can't even select the pics by clicking or
right-clicking.

Sorry for posting this unrelated question to the list, but I've never
seen pics that seem embedded in the email before now.
