But fire up your terminal and look at "man hdiutil". The command
you're after seems to be:
hdiutil create -srcfolder mydir mydir.dmg
Hmm. 'man hdiutil' doesn't show me any srcfolder parameter.

10.3.1 here and it's given for both the "create" verb and as an
example. Hold on... ssh to the machine about 18" away which runs
10.2.8...
No -srcfolder param. And it doesn't like it.

Well, an example is given for creating a disk image from a folder - but
it's hardly intuitive.
Seems like your only route though.
