Just a quick gloss on Bill's findings regarding 'American Typewriter
Condensed Light' in Mac Word X, followed by a request
Bill, the reason you're getting the message that the font doesn't exist
in Word is that the general Office document format can't handle font
names (font names, not filenames) greater than 31 characters in length.
When Apple starting shipping the American Typewriter font family with
Mac OS X, we started getting weird errors because the font names stored
in documents for '...Condensed Light' and '...Condensed Bold' were being
truncated. Font substitution was kicking in, text formatting was
whacked, etc.
Unfortunately, a real fix for that would require a file format change to
accommodate longer font names, and that in turn would require agreement
from the Win Office people, and even then, it wouldn't help people using
older versions of Mac or Win Office.
Since we needed to address the problem before the next ice age (and
since Adobe assured us that *they*, at least, would never ship fonts
with names longer than 31 characters), we opted instead to prune any
fonts with names longer than 31 characters from our internal font list.
As far as Office apps are concerned, the fonts just don't exist. It will
have to be that way for the foreseeable future.
So -- you're not crazy. In attempting to specify a font name in Mac
Word, use the second format - the one with spaces and without hyphens.
Just don't try to use fonts with really long names. The behavior would
be the same in Jaguar and Panther, and should be *relatively* unchanged
in the next version of Mac Office.
----
Now then - can someone give me an idea of how to open file resources
read-only? I need to grab some esoteric font information from the 'FOND'
resource of font files, and I'd like to do it entirely in AppleScript by
parsing out the file.
Thanks in advance.

Ethan, nothing has been obvious to me for years. Thanks for the push
Shane.
I don't know if Quark changed the naming convention so much as they
picked one of a million ways to do it.
AmericanTypewriter.dfont is /Library/Fonts.
There is no font software running.
Using these names of the same font:
AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight
American Typewriter Condensed Light
Talking to the following apps:
QuarkXPress6.0 AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight ERROR
QuarkXPress6.0 American Typewriter Condensed Light WORKS
MS Word X AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight DOES NOT EXIST
MS Word X American Typewriter Condensed Light DOES NOT EXIST
TextEdit1.3v202 AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight WORKS
TextEdit1.3v202 American Typewriter Condensed Light WORKS
Illustrator10.0.3 AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight WORKS
Illustrator10.0.3 American Typewriter Condensed Light ERROR
Appleworks6.2.7 AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight TURNS TO GENEVA
Appleworks6.2.7 American Typewriter Condensed Light WORKS
InDesign2.0.2 AmericanTypewriter-CondensedLight ERROR
InDesign2.0.2 American Typewriter Condensed Light ERROR
I have no experience scripting ID, but I was able to set the applied
font to American Typewriter but couldn't quickly set the style to
Condensed Light.
So I don't know what I proved here.
Was this behavior in Jaguar?
Have I gone off my rocker?
Will these different technigues come together in the future?
Should we do our layouts in TextEdit?
Bill
