This was it! Thank you! I don't know why it didn't occur to me since
I've had this problem before, but it's been a while since these scripts
have run on the problematice machine and in the meantime someone had run
software updater (which I've now disabled :) and updated to 1.8.3.
Because I've had similar problems before I found a folder on another
machine I had set aside and forgotten with various versions of
AppleScript so as you suggested I downgraded from 1.8.3 to 1.6 (both
AppleScript extension and Standard Additions) and every script I've tried
now works perfectly on the 9.1 machine.
Thanks again!! The useful life of an old PowerTower Pro has been
extended, sparing it from the glue factory.
