I read it. And while I can sympathize with their situation, I can't accept
the end result. As a paying customer, why should I be penalized for the
actions of others that I can't control?

I'm the victim here. Don't try to turn me into something else. The people
you've identified won't pay for the product regardless. So they (the people
at Ambrosia) have turned me into a side-effect where once I was a satisfied
customer.
Piracy is a fact-of-life. And in addressing it the way they have, now not
only wil they not get any $$$ from the pirates, they also won't get any more
$$$ from me.
List me as an "Alienated Customer".

Then get people to stop posting permanent keys on the internet because the
thought of paying for software evidently causes them great distress.
Ambrosia posted a long post once about why they do this. They do it because
they got tired of pirates. Stupid ones. People who would download illegal
keys, register their application with them, then call for support.
"Okay, fine. You want to play? We'll play" They came up with some neat
mathematical algorithms that now run their registration. They STILL get
calls from people who never sent them money wanting new keys. But it's
easier to laugh at them.
The current scheme was a reaction to the blatant piracy they were getting
hit with. So if you really wish to point blame, do so at the thieves.
