Mark,

I am wondering if the NetGear router uses DHCP routing that is setup to depend on DHCP by Client Name. I have this on older IPNetRouter software running 9.2.2 on a beige G3. You can config the setup to have both a MAC address and a Client ID for each address where you want to have a static DHCP address. If there is a name entered for an address, the client/server requires that a name be entered into the DHCP Client ID field in the Network System Preferences on the client. Remove the name from the server config and the client will find its address from the MAC address.

The server uses the name I have set in my Client ID field. I have both an ethernet and airport config and use the same name in both. I do not need to setup a second address on the server for the second interface because the name overrides the MAC addresses.

You can trace NetGears scheme back to the original signal tower protocols established by the Romans. They prepended a message destination packet with the root name of the destination ;-x

I recently set up a wireless network with a NetGear WGR614 v2 router and an iBook with an Airport card. Everything works great except that I can't implement one of the security layers available in the router. That's the one that limits access to the network to machines that have their MAC addresses listed in a table on the router. The router setup software requires the MAC address and the device name of the card. The Airport card apparently has no device name.

Can anyone give me some advice about how to get these two pieces of hardware to work together? I'd guess that I need either a way to get a nameless car into the router's wireless card access list or a way to attach a device name to the airport card.
TIA!
