You're only a little bit hazy: you don't need to go via a global.

You can either set a field to itself or replace the contents with itself--either way clears the style information.

(The global trick plus a bit more work can be used to set a style.)

Of course if the data's coming via AppleScript it would be easier to remove the style information before it even gets in there.
