Simon,

I'm still not convinced that Apple script not recognizing the variables in the two scripts is necessarily a "running out of memory" error, but FYI in OS 10 using Smile didn't change my results or the performance at all with either script.

If/when you get a chance to use Jaguar -- try the new 2.0 Script Editor.
The contol-click contextual menus are a real bonus.

Further to my last message, I'd forgot that I written & run that script in Smile rather than the Script Editor. When I re-tested it did indeed run out of memory under Script Editor on a selection containing 1800 tracks, whereas it runs fine under Smile.
