On Monday, February 24, 2003, at 10:00 PM, Jakob Peterhdnsel hammered
out:
Hitting Mac Help and selecting AppleScript Help shows a nice page with
some links on.
One is "How do I start writing scripts?". Clicking this would make me
wish for a nice page(set) with instructions and introduction to AS, but
no!
All it does is make a search for the string shown, and first item is
"How is AppleScript installed for Classic?" ! Gee, this makes me
laugh!.. he...
Could someone on a Mac OS [boot] Only check if that's the same there?
hiii... :-)
<end lurking, wearing incredible amounts of fire protection>
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic here or not Jakob, but figured
I'd act like this was a serious request (the war seems serious enough).
Same thing here, OSX.2.4, AS1.9.1, SE1.9 (all latest updates
installed). This is funny, isn't it! Classic is "dead and buried", yet
the first "hit" from "How do I start writing scripts" is "How is
AppleScript installed for Classic?". How is that supposed to help? (Let
it never be said that I'm unfair; I admit freely and publicly that I
didn't bother to click that link and see what was on the other side.
Why would I if I want to learn AS? Unless I find I need it in Classic
and it isn't already there ...)
My first glance at AppleScript many months ago made me wonder what kind
of people would enjoy torturing themselves with syntax like this. I've
lurked here for a while, written a couple of scripts myself, and
*STILL* feel *totally* lost with the language. In all fairness though,
I'm more of a C/Java kind of guy and have been able to do what I needed
with AS (not much, thankfully). And I've learned what kind of people
would do this stuff. And I am honored to be in the company of such
people.
That's what makes AppleScript work for me. Not the amazingly convoluted
syntax, not the dictionaries that don't make sense, not the lack of
useful *CURRENT* documentation. But the generosity of the people who
have suffered through all this already.
Is that enough nitro-methane for this fire? ;-)
