After Apple's ASLG for AppleScript 1.3.7 and help mods, I think this is the
Golden Age for applescript beginners.
I never started scripting-recording the Finder, but the app I needed,
QuarkXPress, which is not the easiest one to start learning, and I found a
great help here, at this list, and specially at developer's web sites, such
as Sal Soghoian's.
You can still find help here, at MacScripter's BBS
<
http://bbs.applescript.net/>, at MACSCRPT's list
<
http://listserv.dartmouth.edu/archives/macscrpt.html>, Apple's Discussions
BBS <
http://discussions.info.apple.com/> and look at MacScripter's links to
resources, tutorials and books <
http://www.macscripter.net/aslinks.html>
and/or ScriptBuilders, which has hundreds of open-source scripts ready to
download <
http://www.macscripter.net/script-builder.t>. Another must-go is
Bill Cheeseman's <
http://www.AppleScriptSourcebook.com/>, also full of
resources, links to resources and applescript reviews; not to talk about Mr.
Brigg's AppleScript Primer columns
<
http://maccentral.macworld.com/columns/briggs.shtml>. I'm pretty sure I'm
missing lots of cools sites. If you're running a copy of classic, I think
you can still d/l and start learning with 4 or 5 editions of MacScripter's
Magazine <
http://www.macscripter.net/magazine.html>, which I found very
useful/illustrative some time ago.
Perhaps there is not great documentation on applescripting, but there's lots
of knowledge's sources and cool helpers on all of those sites... And ASLG
fills so far applescript's basics...

eScript/AppleScriptLangGuide/index.html>
Anyway, I think it's very Easy *get started* into AppleScript. When I saw my
first "display dialog" up and running, I decided AppleScript was my Second
language, after spanish.
