It sounds interesting to me. As far as further development goes, I would
suggest (based on my limited experience)::
1) release it on VersionTracker (www.versiontracker.com) as freeware
initially, as-is, without the "write to plist" problem solved. This will
get you some idea of how much interest there is more widely. It can be a
big ego boost when you see thousands of downloads of your work. Even nicer
when (if) the reviews are positive. Registration at VT is free. They link
through to your page for downloads.
2) If you haven't already, sign up with the Apple Developer Connection
(it's free online) and have a look at the Cocoa mailing lists, and the
Apple Cocoa/Carbon API docs (which may be available in your Jaguar CD) for
stuff about dealing with the plists and helpers.
3) If you manage to suss out how to do the helper function, then
incorporate that into Missing Link 2.0, which becomes paid-for on account
of its enhanced functionality. (How you get people to pay for it and make
sure registration numbers etc all work is an exercise for the reader. I
once considered mashing the machine serial number, obtained from
/usr/sbin/applesystemprofiler, with the user name, to create a unique ID.
Then Apple changed applesystemprofiler from an actual program to a shell
script which runs Apple System Profiler. I'm still sore - though I can see
why they did it; simpler to keep one program in step than two.)
