As posted, your script generated an error OMM (can't get text items 1

I don't know why that would happen because I trash IE first thing after
any OS Install. For 10.2.3, I had set things up with OmniWeb but Safari
was announced so I picked it up and checked that script with those two
browsers toggled from System Preferences. Anyway, the method of getting
the browser sig posted by JJ would be equally valid.
BTW, what is being reported (by Paul Skinner's script as well) is the
"bundle identifier" not the app's name. You can use that just as easily
to activate an application.
Oh, and that scripting addition... Yes please.
I've put it in my iDisk Public folder for the nonce:
http://idisk.mac.com/philip_aker/Public/WCHandyOSAX1.0.dmg.gz
I've used it previously since Jaguar but this version is only tested on
10.2.3 (and freshly compiled with the new tools). The items available
are:
default download folder
Result: string -- Default download folder POSIX path
default web browser
Result: string -- Default web browser application name (includes
extension).
default web browser path
Result: string -- Default web browser POSIX path
spin pizza integer -- Takes an integer parameter. 0 means stop. Any
other number means start.
user home page
Result: string -- URL of the current user's home page. Will error if
the path is longer than 255 characters.
