Well it's good to know that I'm not crazy. It's a shame that this occurs as it makes using OSA menu a bit frustrating.
But as you note, with OS 9's days numbered I don't think it will cause me any lack of sleep.

Have you tried "ScriptStrip"? It's a Control Strip Module for OS8-9 that launches any compiled script.
Useful and more stable than OSA Menu.
