A few years ago I broached this subject with Arthur Knapp and we basically decided that using Tanaka's MTReplace was the best option. However, since that time, I have/needed to migrate to OS X, but the osax has not, nor are there any plans to do so.

You have probably read about the Satimage osax. You may want to know that Smile (by the same authors, us) implements the Satimage osax' Regular Expressions into a "Find" dialog able of such things as replacing all occurrences of some string through all files of a given folders, or through all open windows - using, or not, the Regular Expressions as well as the other usual "Find" options.

Furthermore, using the "Find" dialog makes it really easy to debug complex Regular Expressions.

Smile's "Replace" is very fast, except when you have it work on a window with styled text, which requires much more manipulation.
