Setting Default Printer

Does anyone have a script for OS X (10.2.6) that I can bandit and modify that does something like the following:

I need to set default printers for each of our various cluster areas (I know, the printers are all in the popdown menu in the print dialog/sheet, but the students are still sending print jobs to the wrong places) and it needs to run from our generic setup image. Each cluster is on its own subnet, so what I think I need to do is 1) grab the IP address, 2) cut out the third digit which represents the subnets at ND, 3) match that up against a table of known locations, 4) set the printer for that area.

Does this sound reasonable? Does anyone have something that does more or less this that I could use?
