PDF Services Require attached Printer?

Howdy,

OS X 10.2.6, PowerBook G4

I recently attempted to run a script via the PDF menu in a print dialog. It resulted in an error so I tried other scripts, which also failed. Choosing "Save as PDF" from the menu worked without a hitch. After much swearing and troubleshooting, I discovered that the scripts would work only if a printer was attached to the computer. The printer didn't even need to be turned on - just attached.

Is this the way it's supposed to work or is something on my system hosed? Is there a way to create a virtual printer to trick the system? I wonder what would happen if a wireless printer was detected (I can't test this).

Thanks for any info that you might offer.
