I was able to mount several sites- 3 universities, 3 businesses during the ftp from Finder discussion. That was one reason I was trying to see if there is something discernible from the client end that is different between the sites.

Just to add some more data...

The utility doing the donkey work in Finder-FTP is
/System/Library/Filesystems/ftp.fs/csmount

console.log shows that this "no worky!", then puts up the username/password
dialog, then again shows "no worky!". Oh, those crazy programers :-)
