Thanks for the additional information, I've pretty much given up on
mounting FTP filesystems ... I did also notice that it works
beautifully for apple ftp sites, but haven't found one other site
that it works for (although I'm sure they are out there).

Just to add some more data...
The utility doing the donkey work in Finder-FTP is
/System/Library/Filesystems/ftp.fs/csmount
console.log shows that this "no worky!", then puts up the username/password
dialog, then again shows "no worky!". Oh, those crazy programers :-)
/System/Library/Filesystems/ftp.fs/csmount -help
doesn't much -- there aren't that many options to set.
Apple's TIL article ID 107562 is no help at all, a web search suggests that
csmount is quite buggy and sensitive to server configuration, but I can't
find anything more specific on that.
Looks like another ftp client is the best way after all -- unless you are
connecting to an Apple server...
