Just to add some more data...

The utility doing the donkey work in Finder-FTP is
/System/Library/Filesystems/ftp.fs/csmount

console.log shows that this "no worky!", then puts up the username/password
dialog, then again shows "no worky!". Oh, those crazy programers :-)

/System/Library/Filesystems/ftp.fs/csmount -help
doesn't much -- there aren't that many options to set.

Apple's TIL article ID 107562 is no help at all, a web search suggests that
csmount is quite buggy and sensitive to server configuration, but I can't
find anything more specific on that.

Looks like another ftp client is the best way after all -- unless you are
connecting to an Apple server...
