Dave,
There are thousands of applescripts in the public domain.
Macscripters.net has a well organized collection and most of the
scripts there have some additional data about the script's function and
implementation. Downloading scripts that provide similar function and
then using those as templates for experimentation and learning is a
good learning-how tool as well as being able to see the algorithms,
styles, and elegance that others use.
Using display dialog to stop and trap values mid-script is also very
useful.
The Applescript Language Guide is hard to beat as a resource to use to
really "get" the object model of AS.

I tend to muddle, too... Perhaps what the community needs is
documentation on how to read a dictionary and connect the pieces, more
than how to write code?
