In this case, I'm attempting to automate the process of storing an import script step. In order to update the import order in the script I have to start an import, change the 'view by' option to 'creation order', and go through the rest of the process, after which I can open the script and save the import order. This is so that I can send out an automated updater for a multi-file FileMaker solution that will run unattended. There's no way to do this portion via AppleScript.

If what you want to do is automate the import of records, why not create a FileMaker Script? This can then be run from AppleScript?
