I have never figured out a way to do this either. I don't think there is
a way just using FileMaker and AppleScript. You could probably grab the
text from the FileMaker field, paste it into an application that
recognizes styled text (eg AppleWorks), style it the way you want, and
then paste it back into FileMaker. I think I'd rather live with unstyled
text :-)

Filemaker comes with an excellent AppleScript reference (the most
extensive I have seen for any application) that gives exactly what you
are asking for. As far as AppleScript itself, I am sure there are also
examples out there. One I am aware of is a HyperCard reference that has
examples of each command.
For most other applications I have seen, however, your criticism is quite
valid.
