Ack. Sorry. First run at the archives misfired somehow; found the answer to
my own question with:

Make new login item AT END with properties {name:"name of
item",kind:[document, application, etc.],path:[POSIX path],hidden::[true or
false]}

...was missing 'at end'. (Many thanks to Shane Stanley!)
