Given how well Apple designs interfaces and software API's it is surprising that Applescript did not have a way of resolving name conflicts. Especially since Applescript did not have a lot of the tools built in to handle text and file manipulations. I understand that AS was designed with the expectation that osax would be created by the community. This problem was not unexpected. It is dealt with in a number of ways in various object oriented languages. Something like a "uses" clause or "import" statement with a renaming option would have solved this.
