Emailer works fine in Classic. I use and script Emailer under OS X a lot. And

If you ever want to try Emailer under OSX, emailer-talk will be happy to solve

any problem you may have. And a new scripter will be welcome there of course.
Just in case you weren't aware: Outlook Express (also a Classic app) was
scripted by the same person, Dan Crevier, who scripted Claris Emailer, and
with largely the same Dictionary, much expanded. He then went on to script
Entourage 2001 and then Entourage X, whose dictionary is a direct superset
of OE 5's. Entourage X is a native OS X app. Anyone familiar with Emailer's
scripting will feel at home with Entourage X, which has an excellent
AppleScript implementation. You can get Entourage X separately now, or as
part of Office v. X.
