My error. I recently ran into a problem where a script errored when I
referred to 'my' var and I hadn't previously defined var. It must have been
a special case of some sort. Testing now, I see that using 'my' with an
undefined and undeclared variable, even in a handler, implicitly makes it a
global variable without error. If I ever work out what circumstances
produced the problem I'll come back.
