It used to be possible to inform the Finder that an application wanted the raw alias files, not the items they point to, by jiggering the application's BNDL and FREF resources correctly. (Claim to open files of type 'alis'.) Unfortunately, this trick doesn't work in Mac OS X, but there's a bug filed on that.
