I used GURLMAIL because that's what the OS 9 Mail script uses to call the mailer. I searched for examples or documentation on a recommended method, and the best I found was of course already sitting on my computer. I tested the script with handlers for both, and GURLMAIL seems to work.

Thank you very much. It behaves a little oddly with the internet system preferences panel (showing up as nothing), but this isn't a major concern, since each browser can be individually set.
