Don't think of it in that way. Perl is just another application that you can
use from AppleScript, just like FileMaker or Quark, albeit a highly flexible
one.
In the same way as you would use FileMaker as part of a scripted database
solution instead of taking a lot of time to implement a complete database
enigine in AppleScript, some people use Perl's vastly faster text handling
capabilities to speed up their string processing. Yes, it makes the solution
less portable, but probably *more* portable than recommending an OSAX to do
the job -- at least Perl is available for both OSX and OS9 and earlier (as
MacPerl).
Just treat messages offering a Perl or "do shell script" solution the same
way as those requiring an OSAX you don't want to install, or an application
you haven't got, or a system version you haven't upgraded to. But bear in
mind that those tools are available should you ever need them.
