(OT) Creator or Signature?

I am updating a programming application's documentation for OSX (and
possible scriptability).
The existing documentation refers to a "signature", which is what I know
through Applescript as a "creator" and "type".
Since Applescript is up-to-date and close to the source, can you scripters
comment on this nomenclature?
