I am updating a programming application's documentation for OSX (and
possible scriptability).

The existing documentation refers to a "signature", which is what I know
through Applescript as a "creator" and "type".

The "signature" of a file is (usually) the "creator" of the application that created it.
AFAIK the "type" is not considered a part of the "signature".

For instance, an application with signature "VIZF" could make files with type "TEXT", "osax", "pdf ", "reco" and many others, and possibly set their creator to "VIZF".
