you should have phrased it: select a message's subject column while
holding the option key down.
I have just realised that this is general behaviour:
select any field while holding the option key and all messages with
an equivalent field value will be selected (I used "equivalent" as it
is not necessarily string equality but rather an equivalence
relationship in general).
