Don't forget Paul's original optimisation: unless the on-the-fly math is absolutely necessary, a list of precalculated values is the way to go for both performance and portability. Simple, and smart.

If on-the-fly calculation, performance and portability are all essential, another option may be to replace the most intensive calculations with simple lookup tables; low precision not being a problem.

Hopefully someone will come with the pre-calculated lists. Not me, though, since I don't have any speed issue. That's because I run the script in Smile. I don't have a faster machine than Nigel, I think, and the effect here is really a lovely spring-like behavior. Except when it comes to calling scripting additions, AppleScript is incredibly fast.
