You're being over-optimistic. There's a lot more to an applet (or
droplet) than just the 'scpt' resource, and osacompile doesn't know
how to add all of it.

Gee Chris, it's wonderful how you manage to echo my thoughts before
you've even had time to read them !
I found a better way to do it. The droplet that creates the new
droplet first dittos itself to the new droplet path, then stores a
new script in it with AE and finally loads it and sets its properties
according to the file dropped on the original droplet. It's looking
good.
The idea (which is nearly realized now) is to create a better
alternative to DropScript, which is what the AE haters on macperlosx
use. The idea is that you drop a perl script onto a droplet and this
creates a new droplet that will take the dropped files as arguments
to the perl script stored in it.
The advantages of an AS droplet are 1. that it can stay open if you
want, and 2. that it knows the path to itself, neither of which
DropScript can do.
Better leave you to catch up on your reading.
