Additionally, you can reference a file with an snd resource in it.

For example, running this from Script Editor works (if you change the path appropriately):

play sound alias "Macintosh HD:JonsCommandsX:Test Scripts:PlaySound"

In this case PlaySound is an applet with an snd resource pasted into it.

Just in case you wanted something that could work from Script Editor.
