OS X and OS 9 Compatibility

Given this recent discussion about OS9 being 'dead' and backward
compatibility and the like (a discussion which has significant merit and
import for lots of users, authors and administrators), I am wondering: Are
there any general principles or generic advice for authors on OS9 systems --
like myself -- who wish to take whatever steps they can to make their
scripts useful for OSX users? And for OSX-based authors to provide some
path to backward compatibility?
Application-specific issues are just that and I think individuals can find
out version compatibility information from the vendor, but I am mostly
interested in file system and other general AS issues, including things like
proper resource insertion in distributed applications (like 'vers'
resources, or icons), naming conventions (.scpt, .app, etc.), OSAX reliance
and other "basic consideration" issues.
I think tools like Rob Jorgensen's 'path to' script for OSX and my own
recent offering of a similar script for both OSX and OS9 are good starts,
helping authors find _incompatible_ items in the 'blessed folder' system.
So, in general, if there are suggestions along this line, I would find it
immensely valuable.
Looking forward to responses...
