Subject: OT: How do you get people to USE your scripts?

Some users use the scripts day in and day out which is great but
there's a small but worrying proportion who's use slowly tails off.
Yeah, I've been there, (oddly enough).
I work as a (more or less) full-time in-house scripter for an artwork
company of around 100 people.
I work for a very small graphic design firm. When someone isn't using
my scripts, its easy enough for me to walk over to their desk and start
slapping them around, (I'm usually long gone by the time the police
arrive). ;-)
My colleagues and I write scripts that save huge amounts of time and
money.
Ohhhhhhhhhh. Yeah, see, that's where my scripts and yours differ....
;-)
I was wondering how you people, as scripters, launch and then promote
your scripts with the users? Do you have a big launch event?
I temporarily stop slapping the designers around for a day or two.
That usually gets their attention. ;-)
No, seriously, what I've found is that a bit of conceptual magic
often does the trick. Rather than creating random "one-off" scripts, I
try to integrate all of my scripts into a scripting "system." There is
a folder on our server entitled "SVSE" which stands for the
Stellarvisions Scripting Environment. Within this folder is an
"About..." file which documents every script, its use, requirements,
restrictions, etc. This folder also contains every nessesary scripting
addition that my scripts require, any associated files, etc. This
central, single folder is especially useful when someone in the office
is upgrading their Mac/OS/etc.
The point is, it is easier for people to remember that the office has
a "scripting system," where they can go and look for specific stuff,
rather than for someone to try and remember if a particular script is
laying around somewhere for their needs.
