This was a big reason for bringing back, in Panther, the desktop folder of classic complete with the put-away menu item in Finder.
Does it now work? Or does it still make copies of items if they are on a secondary disk which is still in the box in use?
Is there any other way to use the catalog info space in HFS+ to store a location for "put away" from some temporary folder other than the desktop?

Maybe a good start would be using a Finder's alias to the file? I would hardly beat Finder's aliases at tracking a file, I suppose.
