Excuse me the cross posting:
The problem
If you upgrade to Panther (apparently this is the only case that shows
the problem) and ***you installed the BSD subsystem *** it might not
have been properly installed.
To find out if you did not get the proper installation , on terminal
type "man malloc" . If you are OK you should have the man page
displayed. If the system claims that "no man entries for malloc" your
BSD subsystem was not properly installed.
You should have something of the order of 600 files not found logged in
your weekly clean up (updating locate database).
To fix the problem
That is what I did, and it was fixed. On /Library/Receipts/ change
the name of the package BSD.pkg ( I changed it to BSD22.pck, you might
deleted if you want).
Insert Panther CD 1 and from the folder "Optional Installs" of the
folder "Welcome to Mac OS X" click on the alias "BSD subsystem".
Follow the prompts and you should be alright. You might not need to
restart. I did.
I have 25 files missing on updating my locate database.
You may trash the BSD22.pck now. I did.
Regards
Deivy
