Sorry for the red herring. I was doing this in Script Debugger, and
'dictionary' is a Script Debugger term. There are lots of other
dictionary-related terms that let me get the dictionary of any scriptable
app in SD, without any parsing necessary - SD does it all via 'dictionary
suite', 'dictionary class', dictionary event', etc.
