Would a semicolon break anything down the line? If not, it's easier
than using the linefeed.
In general, no. I think there are some obscure cases where they're
different, but in general, a semicolon is just as good as (if not
better) than a return. However, as regards sequencing, Mr. Baxter is
correct, and Mr. Smith is not, at least as far as sh is concerned. If
you want to execute the second command only if the first succeeds, join
them with "&&".
