Which is, of course, counter to the way it worked in Classic
Finder. There, the icons in the window were in the exact same
locations as the icons on the desktop, as I always expected they
should be.
Go figure.
I'm pretty sure the Classic Finder couldn't display the contents of
the desktop in a window.
Not of its own machine, but the truth remains the same.

I sure do miss the Put Away functionality.
